Have you ever been able to grow a Lotus? Better still, have you ever been able to grow a Lotus in murky water?

The Lotus is anything but a hallowed blossom and possesses a one-of-a-kind place in the workmanship and folklore of old India and has been a promising image of Indian culture since days of yore. The lotus was picked as the public bloom since it’s anything but a major presence in antiquated practices, sacred texts and folklore. The Bhagavad Gita thinks of it as a representation for separation: Just as the lotus stays immaculate on the murky waters where it grows, individuals should transcend common connections and rise above worldly attachments.

Having said that, what happens when you go to a pond with muddy water and suddenly see a beautiful Lotus at the centre of it? Does the Lotus attract or divert your attention? Do you forget the murky water in front of you and only concentrate and appreciate the beauty of the Lotus and its petals around it? The Lotus grows in murky waters and if it did not grow there, we would not be going near these spots. The best part is that the Lotus does not choose one spot to grow in the same pond, but can grow anywhere inside it. The Lotus grows in all kinds of ponds and brings the beauty that we never could imagine that pond to have.

As Goldie Hawn puts forward in her book – A Lotus Grows in the Mud, “The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud — the obstacles of life and its suffering. … The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. … Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one.”

Let me tell you a small story. One day a swan was feeling lonely and sad and while swimming in the water, it came across a Lotus. The lotus asked the swan about its sadness. The swan replied, “what’s the use of my existence when I can’t fly over to distant lands like the swallow or go deep inside the water like the fishes. I have been confined to this place with so much of my beauty.” The Lotus replied, “that’s how Mother Nature wants us to be. Look at me, I am static in the middle of the water, yet I never complain. Each of us are important in our own small way. The way I signify purity and the swallow signifies speed; you signify grace. Self-contentment makes your journey on earth worthwhile.”

Let us understand this very concept of the Lotus from a different angle now. Each one of us has within us different thoughts. Good thoughts help keep us happy while bad thoughts make us sad. Each bad thought is like a muddy pond and each of these ponds has various components to fill it up and one of them being the Lotus which is the integral part of any good thought. Each thought can have one lotus or many more in it. When we have a bad thought, we have a choice of attaching the good and bad components of that thought to our system. If we choose to attach the bad parts, we will only see the muddy part of the pond. But if we choose to attach the beautiful parts of that thought, we will only look at the lotus and all the mud in our minds will be wiped off. It is how we comprehend our thoughts that will define our happiness, anger or sadness. When we look at any thought, we are actually searching for our happiness within the components, but land up looking at the bad parts of that thought and getting dejected, without realising there are various parts within that particular thought which can also make us happy. If we choose to see the Lotus, our lives will be happier and if we choose to see the mud, our lives will fall into dejection and darkness.

An example of this would be any bad incident in your life which you have encountered and are thinking currently about it. It could be a fight with any person verbally or physically, a broken relationship, an accident or a memory of a beloved person. In each of these incidents while the bad part is the fight, the broken relationship, the accident or the loss of the person, the good part could be someone saved you or the result of it was favourable or the good memories of the person. If you chose the first option, you would naturally be sad and your life will be set back, but if you chose the second one, your life would be much more beautiful and that help you move ahead in life.

Remember to be happy or sad in life is your choice. No one controls your thoughts, your mind, but YOU. You are your master and there is no sense in making someone else your supreme. Others can guide us or provide advice, but it is ultimately our decision to accept or reject the same.

Think about any one incident which has bothered you lately. Think about the options you have. Think about the choice you are making and do let us know if you have changed your thinking pattern to see the Lotus and benefit from it. We would love to know about it.
