Podcast Transcript:

Do you remember everyone’s name that you come across? Do you remember the names of people who are serving you, whether directly or indirectly?

Let us close our eyes and think for some time. Who are the people whom we know and who are the people who matter in our lives? Have you been able to think about them and can you note them down on a sheet of paper? You must be thinking, why am I asking you to do this?

Let me make a beginning for you. We come across a variety of people in our lives daily starting from the security guard, the milk delivery guy, newspaper boy, our chauffeur, sweepers, our family members, our close relatives, our distant relatives, our friends, our friends of friends, colleagues, acquantainces and many more. If we starting counting, the list will be endless. With the impact of social media, the list is ever expanding, where people whom you don’t even know, are liking and commenting on your posts. Most of them, you will never ever even look at their profiles. I understand that these people come through a medium, have their self interests, but they have helped you in some way or the other and brought a smile in your face. Have you bothered to understand why there is a deluge of people coming into your life at every point? When we actually sit down to count how many we know, it is just a handful who actually matter to us. These are mostly people who we know directly, or people who have made some impact on our lives.

You might know many people, but do you acknowledge the existence of all the people you know?

Let me just show you the need to acknowledge a few people who are indirectly related to our lives and affect us positively with a minor story.

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:

“What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?”

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

“Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people.  All are significant…They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ,”hello.”

I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

The examination paper provided by the professor was just to prove a point.

But in our actual lives too, when we look back at people who are indirectly helping us in our work, don’t you think, we ought to know who they are? Don’t you think we ought to acknowledge their existence?

These are people because of whom we can complete our task on time with no hindrance. In the story I just mentioned, imagine if Dorothy was not cleaning the school, would any student ever be able to enter school, leave aside going and giving an exam there? We know they pay these people to do their job, but don’t you think a person who is doing such a mundane job, day in and day out for your benefit, needs some appreciation?

Does it cost us anything to appreciate a person with their first name? Appreciation with the first name will only throw a smile on their face and help them get motivated to do their task even better. These people are the front row of safeguard to our lives. They ensure that we live a clean and healthy life, even if they have to go through all the muck and get infected or affected by it. Addressing them with their first name will only bring a sparkle in their eyes, it will only show that we recognize them for the work they do, it will tell them they are not unworthy. Can’t we do this much?

Let us give these front liners their due, not in terms of just money, but in terms of of our gratitude , our appreciation, which they most deserve from us. Let us help elevate their lives so that we are not subject to face issues which they handle for us daily. Let us attempt to get to know at least one person’s name daily who matters in our lives, by serving us every day. Let us throw an atmosphere of love and appreciation for them, so it can ease their life as well. When we do that, after a tough day’s work, it will help them go back to their families and shower their love and affection on their family as well. You will have sent a significant amount of energy into their system by just calling them with their names and appreciating their work.

There are people who would not like to appreciate the work of these guys, for they think if they appreciate, it will only give them an advantage. Understand one thing, the law of karma is such that what you give, you will get back too. I always make it a point to try to call all who matter in my life with their names and tell them how much I appreciate the work that they do. I get back as much love from them also.

Would you want to remember and appreciate such people who indirectly affect your life? Would you want to bring happiness in the lives of people who help bring happiness in your life?

Tell us if you have faced such a situation in life where you have gone out of the way to appreciate people such as Dorothy? We would love to hear it from you.
