Have you ever stayed alone? Are you deeply engrossed with your gadgets?
Hello, everyone! This is once again your life transformation coach, Neeraj Singhvi, all set to make you live a better life, a life with the touch of humanism.
It’s been sometime since my last podcast went live. I was actually redoing my book “Temple of Destiny” for all of you. Finally, it’s done and I find it really satisfying that a long due work has been finished and all the help came from my laptop without which I don’t think I could have finished it in the time that I took. This episode brought me to question: Did I lose out or did I gain? I lost out on important time, but gained satisfaction. Would I have been more satisfied if I had spent the same time with my family instead of my gadget?
Gadgets have been a boon to all of us. From the laptop to the smart phones, e-readers, smart watches, wireless connectivity, high-speed internet, all of them are aiding our fast life like never before. Working has become easier than ever, even though the number of working hours has increased. Income levels have gone up and there is more power in the hands of the users. Everything from writing books to completing financial transactions is in the palm of your hand, and gadgets have become our most sought-after friend now. But, as the use of gadgets increase there is something we are missing out on.
Let me tell you a small story which will enlighten you on this:
“I spent an hour in the bank with my dad, as he had to transfer some money. I couldn’t resist myself and asked…
‘’Dad, why don’t we activate your internet banking?’’
‘’Why would I do that?’’ He asked…
‘’Well, then you won’t have to spend an hour here for things like transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will be so easy!’’
I was so excited about initiating him into the world of Net banking.
He asked, ‘’If I do that, I won’t have to step out of the house?
‘’Yes, yes’’! I said, I told him how even grocery can be delivered at door now and how amazon delivers everything!
His answer left me tongue-tied.
He said ‘’Since I entered this bank today, I have met four of my friends, I have chatted a while with the staff who know me very well by now.
You know I am alone… this is the company that I need. I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have enough time; it is the physical touch I crave.
Two years back I got sick, the store owner from whom I buy fruits came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried.
When your Mom fell down few days back while on her morning walk. Our local grocer saw her and immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows where I live.
Would I have that ‘human’ touch if everything became online?
Why would I want everything delivered to me and force me to interact with just my computer?
I like to know the person who I’m dealing with and not just the ‘seller’. It creates bonds of Relationships.
Does Amazon deliver all this as well?’’’
Technology isn’t life. Spend time with people. Not with devices.
As time goes by, we get lonelier and gadgets become handy during these times. But, when we bring gadgets into our lives first, the being lonely time comes faster because they are the only thing, we have with us. When we are young, gadgets and the internet take us away from actual people and the actual touch. It is the actual people and not the virtual ones which can help us stay active and energised in our lives. The reason we have our senses, emotions, feelings, is to communicate with an outer world, not just virtually but in reality. By just staying alone and not communicating physically, we are killing our own instincts, our senses, our feelings and emotions which are so important in recognizing and understanding another person.
Can we feel the touch without being near a person? Can we sense the emotion of another person in reality without being near them? Can we smell the truth, which another person talks without being in close touch with them? Can we feel a sense of togetherness meeting no one? Can we share another person’s happiness or sadness without seeing them?
Gadgets are gadgets. Even if there is artificial intelligence being built into it, they are devoid of any senses, feelings and emotions which we respond to. They can analyse and provide a solution technically, but cannot replace the human touch we are born with. From the time we were babies and grew up holding our parents’ hands, played with our friends holding hands, grew up and married holding another person’s hand, we cannot and should not let go off the human touch for the sake of a gadget. A gadget cannot replace us. It can only support our needs. Let us understand, even our gadgets need the human touch to function. Why do we forget this after providing it with our human touch?
Let us not make ourselves obey the gadgets. Instead, let us make the gadget obey us. Let them make things easy for us, but let us not make our life easy at the cost of our relationships. Let us recognize the power of the human touch.
But we are bound by the digital ag and what can we do about it?
So, here are the 5 tips to improve human touch:
- Create Memorable Experiences, that actually lasts because that is what will help you meet up.
- Keep your social media communications personal and human because that will instil in you an urge to meet up.
- Use communication automation to make room for human Interaction because only then can we meet up.
- Use digital tools to Increase the flow and efficiency of communication and leave the balance communication after meeting up.
- Know when digital communication can’t replace face-to-face because only then will you meet up.
When you meet up, there will be a human touch to it and you will never be lonely.
