So, what is the leaking bucket?
Wikipedia describes the leaky bucket as an algorithm based on an analogy of how a bucket with a constant leak will overflow if either the average rate at which water is poured in exceeds the rate at which the bucket leaks or if more water than the capacity of the bucket is poured in all at once.
But more than that, the leaky bucket concept or theory relates very well to customer relationship management and life management. Strange is it? How can a leaking bucket relate to customers or life management?
In the parlance of customer management, the leaking bucket theory is the model that seeks to describe the process of customer gain and loss, also known as customer churn and is directly related to profitability.
But, since we are talking about living a better life here, let’s take a few examples where we will discuss about leaking buckets concerning our lives:
You wake up early morning trying to do your Prayers or Yoga but your mind is elsewhere and before you know it, you’re done with it, without being mindful of it. This is a leaking bucket because the bucket you were looking at filling with your prayers or yoga is actually not getting filled with it as your mind is elsewhere.
Let’s take another example. You’re very kind to outsiders or people in general and speak with them gently, but with your own family, you’re always harsh or rude. This is a leaking bucket as you are unable to fill up your bucket with kindness completely.
Here’s another one. You honour and treat your guests well but when they leave, you gossip about them and talk about their flaws. This is also a leaking bucket as all the goodness gets leaked out as soon as the guests leave.
Can you guess about a leaking bucket when you are into reading religious books? You try to read as many religious books, listen to morning prayers, participate in social services but you swear, insult and curse daily. This is a leaking bucket as while your bucket should have been filled with all the goodness of the books or prayers, it is filled up with something else.
If you heard about helping people, then there is a leaking bucket there too. You help others but you’re doing it to gain something in return from them and not doing those acts of kindness selflessly. The leaking bucket is here because a selfless act is being replaced by a gain.
If you are into coaching business or in advisory services like counselling, can you guess what could be the leaking bucket? Well, you frequently advise or preach others, but practice none yourself.
A leaking bucket is also experienced when you slander other devout persons out of hatred or spite when your views do not meet one another.
When you look down on others and feel more superior than them, judging their level of knowledge, based on external appearances, it is also a leaking bucket.
In each of the examples that I just narrated, you will find that while you wanted to fill the bucket with something good, you cannot use the good as the bucket gets empty as soon as the incident is over. The leak is pretty big.
In our lives too, we struggle to fill our “lives” which is the bucket, with “earnings” of knowledge which is the water, hoping it will retain inside but it is “leaked by the many flaws” which are the holes, that we commit daily. The leaking bucket theory uses a bucket that has several holes in the +base and its walls. A hose is put into the bucket and it is filled with water. Some of the water will run out of the holes. In the analogy, water going into the bucket represents lives and knowledge while the holes represent a consistent loss of acquired lives and knowledge. In the process, we are left with the wrong thoughts and people, thus affecting our lives negatively. It is also important to note here, that the larger the holes, the more the water will flow out or if the number of holes is large in number, then too the water will flow out excessively.
The leaking bucket is a fascinating method to depict how individuals can erase their good deeds by either following their good deeds with bad ones or by mixing up their good deeds with awful ones. This is something we as a whole should be aware of when we intend to accomplish something.
It is an excellent reminder for all of us, including myself, to try and patch these holes up so we may progress further on this beautiful path of life. The more we patch up, the more we will be able to live a fulfilled life because then our lives will be filled up with all the goodness that we should be made up of. Everyone has the holes in their buckets and we all know they are difficult to seal completely, but if we can patch the holes to make them smaller in size or patch few of them completely, the better the chances of living a better life.
Tell us if you remember any incident in your lives where you have come across any of the situations described in this episode? Have you been able to patch the holes which have made your life into a leaking bucket? We would love to know.
